Parenting: Breaking Free of the Paradigm of
Control and Domination
with Teresa Brett
Our
socialization from birth has reinforced the
false belief that children are not worthy
of our full respect and trust, but must be
controlled and dominated in order to grow
into productive and contributing members of
our society. This four hour immersion session
will dissect how the cycle of socialization
has operated to maintain this paradigm of
domination and control. We will look at how
we can break free and create new ways of being
in relationships with children. Using the
ideas of Paulo Freire's work in liberatory
education and the process of dialogue, we
will examine together the ways we can leave
behind our early socialization and embrace
liberation parenting.
We'll
tackle the triggers and stressors that cause
us to fall back into the control and domination
paradigm, the practices that help us learn
from past behaviors and initiate ways we can
break free of the traditional socialization
process.
