A
Short History of a Long Journey
I
can't honestly remember a time in my adult
life when I didn't want to be involved in
the healing arts. At the very beginning, I
attended college with the idea of becoming
a psychologist. The college I attended was
very much into behavioral modification (running
rats through mazes, etc.) and it just didn't
make much sense to me.
Fortunately,
some would say, around that time I managed
to run across a bully who came just short
of threatening my life. After it was all over
I decided to study martial arts. It was my
enormous good fortune to start these studies
with Master Share K. Lew. He was, at the time,
the only authentic, temple-trained Taoist
Master in the West who was openly teaching
the deeper parts of his art to non-Orientals.
This
was so much more interesting to me than college
that I dropped out shortly thereafter to study
with Master Lew (Sifu, as we called him) four
days a week. Although I did pursue some martial
arts with Sifu, my real passion was the Taoist
healing arts and qigong he was teaching. Sifu
Lew remains active and vital to this day.
As
the years progressed, I was also fortunate
to study other healing disciplines: NLP with
John Grinder, hypnotherapy with John Kappas
and numerous students of Milton Erickson,
and more formal training in Oriental Medicine
at Emperor's College of Traditional Oriental
Medicine in Southern California. Later, I
was able to go to China, where I took and
passed the test given for Doctors of Oriental
Medicine.
While
at Emperor's College, I met Dr. Robert Anderson,
OMD, who became my mentor and friend. Before
he passed away, Bob and I spent a good amount
of time exploring some of the more arcane
aspects of both Oriental Medicine and energy
medicine in general. I am deeply indebted
to him for his guidance and support in those
early years.
At
this point, after more than 38 years pursuing
the concept of balance and wholeness for myself
and my patients, every day is still an amazing
learning process. Nothing is more exciting
to me than seeing people improve their health
and well being and increase their quality
of life.
I
cherish the support and learning I've received
from my many patients over the years, and
particularly the support and love of my wife,
Lauren.
Be
well,
Dr.
Bruce
